This past Saturday, Feb. 24, the Sacred Heart swim and dive team competed in the KHSAA Swimming and Diving State Championship and won their sixth consecutive state title. The Valkyries swam at the University of Louisville’s Ralph Write Natatorium and earned a score 520.5, beating their score from last year. It was the 29th overall state championship for the Valkyries.

Sacred Heart won the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay, and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Claire Donan won the 200-yard medley race, and freshman Annabel Crush won the 100-yard backstroke.

Three Sacred Heart seniors competed on the state team this year, one of them being Ellie Masterson. Masterson has competed in state for the Valkyries since her freshman year. When asked about her goals for the meet, Masterson said, “Our main focus was to win all three relays. We also wanted to score at least 500 points and have all 20 swimmers qualify for finals.” The Valkyries were successful in reaching each of these goals as they lived up to their expectations.

Seniors Lizzy Schrenger, Ellie Masterson, and Tonner DeBeer smile with the state trophy.

Most swimmers, however, train with their own club teams alongside Sacred Heart practices. “We each train differently,” Masterson said, “and for me personally, I train intensely up until the last two weeks of the season.” The Valkyries’ hard work paid off in their final races of the season.

When asked about how it feels win another championship, Masterson said, “I cannot imagine a better feeling. I’m so happy to end my final swim season with another state title.”

Congratulations again to the Valkyries on gaining their sixth straight state title.
