The Sacred Heart Basketball team defeated defending State Champions, Mercer County, Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Louisville Invitational Tournament. At the end of the night, the final score was 83-48 and Kia Sivils was awarded the Bunny Daughtery Defensive Player of the Tournament.

Sivils expressed her gratitude towards the award by saying, “it feels good because playing defense you don’t get much credit because you’re not scoring that much. I just felt like I worked hard to make sure their best players don’t score that much and that we hold them under 50.”

This LIT title is Sacred Heart’s first since 2007 and is their 8th win since the tournament was first established in 1973. When asked why this tournament was such a big win for the team, junior Ashlee Harris replied that it was a big one especially since “now [they] have all the pieces to [their] team [for a state championship win].”

SHA’s basketball team can be described as a group of humble, hard working ladies who Sivils describes as a “sisterhood because [they] are so close and those are [her] best friends and [she] wouldn’t trade them for the world.”

Though a highlight of the tournament was taking home the title, Coach Moir said the biggest take away was seeing everyone come together and play well while having a chance to contribute. “We [always] talk about being more of a team and being there for each other and [get] excited when someone does something well.

Sacred Heart is 23-5 and are ranked #1 in the state. Come out and support the Basketball Team as they take on Scott High School for senior night on Wednesday, February 14 at 7:00pm.
