The Sacred Heart Academy golf team was back up on top over the weekend at the site of the state championship, Bowling Green Country Club.

Senior Ryan Bender led the way, firing a 74 to secure a third place finish. Junior Taylor Edlin was next up shooting a 79 to remain in the top 10.

The Valkyries lacked two of their top players due to an injury and a disqualification for missing the tee time due to Saturday’s ACT. This didn’t hold the Valkyrie’s back from taking home another consecutive win.

“It was a lot of pressure on us from the start,” said Bender. “Taylor and I sat on the first tee and knew we had to step up in order to win with two of our players gone.”

Russell County High School ran close with the Valkyrie’s but fell by three shots. The win was the closest it has been all year for SHA.

Head Coach Leslie Bender never doubted her team even without two of the top players.

“Our team is really deep and everyone plays as a team. I’m really proud of the fact that they can face that kind of adversity and still come out on top,” said Coach Bender.

Other finishers from SHA include junior Cameron Martin firing an 80 and freshman Gracie Elliot putting up an 88.

The Valkyrie’s are back in action in the Bunny Daughtery Invitational hosted in Louisville, Ky. at Hurstbourne Country Club on Sept. 16.
