The Sacred Heart lacrosse team defeated the Eastern Eagles 9-6 Sunday afternoon on Horton Field to secure their 5th straight Braveheart Championship title.

The Valkyries were led by senior Mary Katherine Hardy and junior Lucy Hubbs, who each contributed three goals apiece.  Hubbs scored the first goal within the first minute of the game, setting the tone for the Valkyries.

Senior Abby Thompson added two goals for SHA and senior Ryan Gahm scored one.  Junior Sydney Wood contributed three assists, while junior Maddie Landoch had one assist.

Hubbs spoke highly of her team’s offense.  She said “We would look for that open opportunity with a cutter or somebody to drive in the middle and get a goal.”

Junior goalie Stewie Campbell led the Valkyrie defense, saving many critical shots.  In the second half, the SHA defense held the Eagles offense for nearly five minutes straight.

Coach Andrea Merchak said “we recognized they were doing the same play every time, and our defense was able to shut it down.  They would shoot from the same spot, and we were able to keep them out for quite a long time.”

Senior Abby Thompson confirmed the SHA victory, adding on the ninth and final goal with five seconds left to play in the game.

Hardy said “To end the tournament with a Sacred Heart win is so amazing for us.  It means so much to our team, but also to the school as well.”

The Valkyries will take on the Assumption Rockets on Tuesday, April 25th at 7:30 on Assumption Green.
