After almost two months of intense training and conditioning, the Sacred Heart track and field team debuted with a successful start to the spring season through determined racing and efficient teamwork.

This past Saturday, Jan. 28, the track and field team traveled to the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky to compete in the first indoor track meet of the season, Wildcat Classic.

Racing highlights included Junior Kathleen Simms placing second in the mile with a time of 5:09 and sixth in 800 meter run with a time of 2:26.

Freshman Iaunia Pointer dominated the 60 meter run with a time of 7.95 seconds and the 200 meter run with a time of 25.68 seconds. Pointer placed third in both sprint events.

When asked about the team’s performance, Pointer said, “I feel like this was a great start for the team. I believe this will be a very successful season.”

Freshmen Iaunia Pointer and Kami Springfield, and juniors Shelby Arnett and Natalie Ducas competed in the 4×400 meter relay, finishing in third place with a time of 4:11.

Senior Isabelle Schafer and sophomores Katie Beckman, Emmie Jackson, and Kendall Knight raced in the 4×800 meter relay and achieved a time of 10:57 with a fifth place finish.
