Sun SETS on Volleyball Seniors

The Sacred Heart Academy volleyball team defeated the Henry Clay Devils 3-1 Tuesday night at SHA for the Valkyries senior night.

Senior festivities began following the freshman and JV games. It was a bittersweet time with lots of tears, but the team had to quickly prepare themselves for what would be a very competitive game.

Because SHA has nine seniors, not all of them were able to start, but each senior played a sufficient amount of time in a game honoring their success.

The Valkyries started off strong, winning the first two sets 25-23 in a very exciting manner. The Devils fought back defeating the Valkyries 25-21 in the third set of the game. In an exhilarating last game, SHA defeated Henry Clay 25-22. The gym was filled with cheers and tears.

Paige Hammons, a senior captain and  University of Florida committ said, “It was great playing a more competitive game because more fans would be interested! Although we were all sad, we knew we still had to focus and play our game.”

Because it was senior night, the day started much earlier than usual for the volleyball team. The team and their parents arrived at SHA at 3:30 to set up decorations and the senior trifolds, which contain many pictures reflecting their time on the volleyball team throughout their careers at SHA.

Beside the trifolds, there were notepads under each of the nine seniors’ posters where family and friends could leave them a nice note. Free cake was also available.

The Valkyries’ post season begins on Wednesday, Oct. 19th vs. the Waggener Wildcats.
