SHA Golf Takes State

SHA golf team receives state championship trophy.

The Sacred Heart golf team captured their 10th state title in the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac KHSAA Girls High School State Championship on Wednesday at Bowling Green Country Club.  The Valkyries finished the tournament with a total of 628 shots.

The five Valkyries who played in the tournament include senior Morgan Tinsley, junior Ryan Bender, junior Erin Rowland, sophomore Taylor Edlin, and freshman Jacqueline Steier.  In the individual leaderboard, Bender and Rowland tied for seventh place, Tinsley placed tenth, Edlin placed 30th, and Steier finished in 48th place.

The Valkyries completed Tuesday’s round in first place, 12 shots ahead of Shelby County.  On Wednesday SHA pushed even further ahead to win the title, defeating runner-up Shelby County by 42 shots.

Bender said, “It was our goal to bring the state title back here so it feels really good to come back and redeem ourselves.”

Last year in the state tournament, the Valkyries came up short of a state title and finished in sixth place overall.  This year, the majority of SHA’s top five players were returners.

Tinsley said, “It was nice to win by 42 after coming in sixth last year.  It’s basically the same team, so it proved that we were capable of winning.”
