The Sacred Heart Cross Country team won the Valkyrie Invitational on Saturday morning at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park. The Valkyries scored 96 points, defeating runner-up Assumption who finished with 115 points.

SHA Junior Kathleen Simms led the way for the Valkyries, finishing in tenth place with a time of 20:02.

Other SHA top finishers included freshman Sarah Wilkinson in 15th, sophomore Katie Beckman finished 20th, junior Kathryn Seay ended in 34th place, senior Abby Reburn finished 39th, and sophomore Emory Jackson crossed the line in 69th place.

The weather was not favorable, as rain showers came in during the race, making the course muddy and wet.

SHA captain and junior Shelby Arnett said, “A lot of our girls struggled but we got through it.  No one backed down.  I am very proud of how we did.  We had some personal records for some girls today, which we are very proud of.”

In the seeded races of the day, Carmel High School (Ind.) won the Valkyrie Invitational, and Saint Xavier won the Trinity Invitational.

The Valkyries will race next Saturday in the Midwest Catholic Cross Country Championships at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering, Ohio. Follow @SHACrossCountry and @SHANews_Lou for race updates.
