Want to know more about the new teacher towering over the freshmen on the third floor? Meet 6′ 6″ Head Volleyball Coach Brett Versen. He is a first year physics and forensic science teacher here at Sacred Heart Academy. Teaching may be new to Mr. Versen, but going to school and working with teenage girls isn’t.

Mr. Versen graduated from the Ohio State University in 2008 with a mechanical engineering degree. He was a 4-year player on the Buckeye’s men’s volleyball team. As a NCAA student athlete the lessons he learned in prioritizing and managing his time have led him to become the teacher and volleyball coach he is today.

Of his playing career, Versen said, “Those experiences, I wouldn’t change for the world.”

After his collegiate career, he went on to work as an engineer in Cleveland, Ohio. Teaching hadn’t always been on his radar, but when a science job opened up after he was named SHA’s head volleyball coach, he jumped at the chance.

Prior to becoming part of the SHA community, he gained valuable coaching experience at James Madison University, University of Kentucky, and North Oldham High School.

On the court, Mr. Versen is satisfied with where his team is at right now and the way his players expect to be the best. He feels challenged to help them continue to work hard and improve each day. His hope for the end of the season is to lead the Valkyries to their second KHSAA state championship in school history.

Spending time with his family is just as important to him as coaching and teaching. Mr. Versen is married to former Assumption and OSU All-American setter, Marisa Main Versen. The two met while playing volleyball at OSU and have a two-year-old daughter Chaney. Chaney attends Sacred Heart Preschool on the Sacred Heart Schools campus and is often seen at volleyball practice being wheeled around in a ball cart.

Of Chaney, Mr. Versen said, “She is becoming more and more fun and adventurous as each day goes.”

Catch Mr. Versen on the volleyball court on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7p.m. as the Valkyries take on the Toppers of Presentation Academy.
